Last time, we covered the ADHD signs nobody put in the brochure

The phone in your hand you couldn't find

The shirt that kept catching every drop

The blank page that broke your brain despite the talent sitting right behind it

We barely scratched the surface

There are more signsJust as specific, just as unspoken and just as immediately recognizable if you've lived them

THE HAND AWARENESS ISSUE

Hands in particular become a source of self consciousness in social situations because there is no automatic, background processed answer to what they should be doing

Neurotypical physical ease in social settings often runs on autopilot

For many with ADHD, that autopilot is unreliable

So the brain consciously attempts to manage something it was never designed to consciously manage, and the result reads as awkward

Fidgeting, twiddling, and repetitive hand movement also serve a regulatory function

physical stimulation that helps maintain alertness and focus during low-stimulation situations

READING COMPREHENSION AND INFORMATION PROCESSING

ADHD affects the ability to sustain attention on low stimulation input

Dense written text, especially without visual anchors, formatting, or narrative momentum, is among the lowest stimulation formats available

Rereading the same sentence multiple times without retention is not an intelligence issue

It is an engagement issue

The brain disengages mid sentence and the words process without meaning attaching to them

Audio and visual formats naturally deliver higher stimulation per unit of information

Which is why many with ADHD find them significantly more accessible

Audiobooks, video content, and text to speech tools are not workarounds

They are legitimate, brain compatible alternatives

NON LINEAR STORYTELLING

Working memory and narrative sequencing are directly linked

To tell a story in order, the brain must hold the timeline

Suppress tangential associations, monitor the listener's comprehension, and pace the delivery simultaneously

ADHD disrupts all four in real time

The result is a story told in the order thoughts arrive, not the order events occurred

With frequent detours, re entries, and a punchline that is fully formed internally

But takes significantly longer to reach out loud

This is not poor communication.

It is high speed internal processing trying to compress itself into linear external speech.

VICARIOUS EMBARRASSMENT SENSITIVITY

Sometimes referred to as empathic embarrassment or secondhand shame

This is a recognized emotional response

Where witnessing someone else's humiliation activates a personal stress response as though the experience were one's own.

In ADHD, this connects to rejection sensitive dysphoria (RSD)

An intense emotional reactivity to perceived failure, embarrassment, or social rejection that is disproportionate by neurotypical standards but neurologically consistent with how the ADHD brain processes social threat.

Avoiding situations where unpredictable embarrassment might occur, live events, unscripted social settings, is a common and logical protective response.

SELF ASSESSMENT

  1. How many of these patterns have you written off as personality quirks rather than neurological patterns?

  1. Are the tools and formats you use daily actually compatible with how your brain processes information or are you forcing neurotypical methods that consistently fail you?

  1. Have you ever been made to feel unintelligent for something that was actually an attention or memory processing issue?

  1. Which of these has cost you the most socially, professionally, or personally?

PRACTICAL STEPS FORWARD:

  • Designated spots for high loss items (keys, phone, wallet) same place, every time, no exceptions, reduce the working memory load entirely

  • Tide To Go Pen. Genuinely. Keep one on you.

  • For creative work, always start with a reference, a constraint, or an existing framework, use external structure to bypass initiation paralysis

  • Switch to audio or visual formats for information you need to actually retain, this is accommodation, not avoidance

  • For storytelling, write or voice memo the key points before telling the story in high stakes situations

  • Learn about rejection sensitive dysphoria specifically, it reframes a lot of emotional experiences that may have gone unexplained for years
